ROLLESTON GROWER REGAINS CONTROL<\/span><\/h1>

Based in Rolleston, Central Queensland, Sam Fairweather<\/strong> represents the third generation of his family to farm in the region. Managing a broadacre operation that\u2019s around 2,000 hectares, Sam grows chickpeas, sorghum and wheat, with mungbeans rotated in when conditions are right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spending time away from the land working in mining, Sam returned home and has been managing the farm for the past year, continuing the operation his family has steadily built over generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy grandpa drew a ballot to buy his first block,\u201d Sam said. \u201cDad later bought the Crescent block, which hadn\u2019t been cropped before, and that\u2019s where he really started farming operations here.\u201d

When weeds started getting away<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many growers across Central Queensland, grass weeds became an increasing challenge. Blanket spraying was proving costly, and control wasn\u2019t where it needed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe grass was getting away from us and we needed to get on top of it,\u201d Sam said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sam had already seen WEED\u2011IT technology in action through people he trusted. A former employee owned a 30\u2011metre WEED\u2011IT tow\u2011behind unit, and local mates around Rolleston were running WEED\u2011IT systems fitted to John Deere machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat gave me the confidence to look into it further,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking to Croplands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After an online enquiry, Sam was put in touch with Croplands\u2019 Lachlan (Lachie), who guided him through the options and helped tailor a solution for the farm\u2019s existing setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLachie was very helpful,\u201d Sam said. \u201cHe answered all of my questions, and when a few things came up, he sorted them straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sam ultimately invested in a WEED\u2011IT Retrofit Kit<\/strong>, fitted to a John Deere 4038<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early gains where it counts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s still early days to measure a full return on investment, the value is already clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bit early to see the proper return,\u201d Sam said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re noticing the weeds are going and the chemical savings are there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By spraying only where weeds are detected, Sam has been able to cut chemical use while hitting harder\u2011to\u2011control weeds more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re spending much less on chemical and putting more onto the weeds we couldn\u2019t kill before.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A solid investment backed by the right people<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Sam, the technology is only part of the equation, the support behind it matters just as much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe guys were great to deal with, and they still are,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With improved weed control, reduced chemical spend and reliable back\u2011up from the Croplands team, the WEED\u2011IT Retrofit Kit is shaping up to be a strong addition to the Fairweather operation as they continue farming into the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
